Alice Gelden
Alice Geldenhuys (b.2000) works and lives in London.
'Alice Geldenhuys starts with a figure. That’s where it all starts, always. From the Life Room to the
Salon, painting is about the body and its traces. Trying to chase the image of itself, here to there,
you to me, subject to object, gaze to image.
Working light, thin paint in quick movements, producing milky veils, chalky colours, thin wash, you
can see the routes the brushes have passed over. Sometimes painting with the image balanced
on her knee. Focusing on the body, the figure, the thing in front of us. Focusing on the quality and
feel of the paint. Movement, physicality, energy. Turning, shifting, moving the image around and
around until - it all clicks into place.
And when it does, that’s it! Everything slots into place, settles down. Chasing a feeling, a specific
kind of moment in movement, a slice of the action. Like when you raise your hands high and
stretch. Bend your body over and flop down against yourself. Exhaustion, release, collapse.
Holding it within the image, frozen, yes! Stretching back, feeling the movement in your joint,
cracking a knuckle, fluid release, hitting that vagal nerve wide open. Right until it gets to that point
where everything just clicks into place.'
